Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially taken over the investigation of all the 41 cases related to the online stock trading scam ed in the state.

Taking to microblogging site X, Sarma said, “To ensure a fair investigation on the online stock trading scam, we requested Govt of India to formally hand over all 41 ed cases to the CBI.”

CM Sarma said the Assam government will extend all possible to the CBI to ensure justice is served at the earliest.  

“CBI is officially taking over this matter and we’ll extend all possible to ensure that justice is served at the earliest,” he added in his post on X.  

The online stock trading scam came to light in Assam in August 2024, when people who had invested huge amounts of money in a company owned by elusive Deepankar Barman, found that his office has been closed since August 21 this year and he is absconding.

After dozens of such online trading fraud cases were ed, the Assam cabinet decided to transfer the cases to the CBI for investigation.

So far, at least 65 people have been arrested in connection with the online stock trading scam.

Assamese actor-choreographer Sumi Borah and her photographer husband Tarkik Borah are among those who have been arrested in the scam.
